HOW TO GET INTO GOSFORD HIGH SCHOOL
Updated April 2020
Being the only selective high school in its vicinity, Gosford High school is a popular school for applications – it is also the oldest high school in the area with a history dating back to 1927. Gosford high boasts its excellence for holistic education, which encourages socially and ethically aware approaches to academic pursuit. They enjoy school events which promote school spirit such as their sporting exchange with Orange high school which has been a tradition for now 49 years.
As Gosford High is an academically selective school, there are additional requirements for application for the school. There are two main methods of gaining entry into Gosford High
Year 7 entry
The standard protocol for all students finishing primary school and applying for any selective highschool is to sit the Selective Placement test. This exam is hosted by the department of education at official testing centres (usually a local high school) during march for year 6 students. The test itself contributes to 200 marks of a score out of 300 which is sent to the school as part of the the application process, the other 100 marks are determined through internal performance in literacy and numeracy in your child’s primary school. The minimum entry score for entry into Gosford High in 2019 was 188/300. The actual test components comprise of:
- Writing (based on a creative stimulus)
- 45 questions of Maths
- 40 questions of English Reading comprehension
- 60 questions of General Ability
Because the format of the test is so specific, it is important to prepare with the right resources and methods that are applicable to sitting the exam. Often successful entry into Selective schools is based on hard work and smart preparation beyond academic excellence. At alchemy tuition, we offer a personalised tutoring service that can effectively identify your child’s skills and weaknesses to best prepare them for the test. All our tutors are also equipped with hundreds of resources specifically designed for selective school preparation to ensure plenty of practise opportunity.
Year 8-12 entry
Gosford High School also offers late entry into their school which is assessed through school performance in year 7, and the Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) run by ACER in Melbourne. Students applying for entry by this means are also required to hand in a copy of their school reports from the last 2 years, NAPLAN results, as well as any evidence of academic achievements (awards and certificates). With this option, schools are often looking out for proof of sustained academic excellence and steady progress. Our unique 1-1 service at Alchemy tuition ensures that our mentorship goes beyond academic teaching, but that all our tutors engage in meaningful relationships that can foster good study habits long-term and provide your child with the confidence to eventually achieve their goals with full autonomy.
