HOW TO GET INTO GIRRAWEEN HIGH SCHOOL
Updated April 2020
Girraween High School is a fully selective co-educational school located in the West of Sydney at 110 Gilba Rd, Girraween. They have a maximum intake of 120 students in year 7-10, and there is an extra intake of 20 students in year 11, bringing the year 11 and year 12 cohort up to 140. Entry is based on a minimum Selective Schools Test placement score of 225 out of 300 possible marks and is capped to ensure that each student has abundant access to resources, and receive the necessary amount of personalised attention by teachers. As there are only 17 fully selective schools in the state of NSW, entry into Girraween high school is extremely competitive – successful placement is not only dependent on academic talent, but is often the result of targeted preparation and hard work.
Placement in selective schools is determined largely by the Selective Schools Placement test, which takes place in March prior to the year of application. Out of a score of 300, 100 marks are allocated to the internal assessment of your child’s performance in literacy in numeracy within their primary school, and 200 marks are allocated to their result in the placement test. A full day is allocated to take the test (with breaks) in which students are assessed on their reading, writing, mathematics and general ability skills. These tests follow a very specific format and time structure, so familiarity in preparation is key.
That’s where our tutors can help. All our tutors at Alchemy have access to a tutor hub which is fully equipped with resources such as past papers and specific selective school test style questions and worksheets which will help build your child’s confidence when sitting for this examination. Our private tutoring service will match your student with a tutor from our ever-expanding network to ensure that your child receives personalised mentorship to match their specific needs. The best part about our service is that there are no long-term contracts so you have the luxury of negotiating around timing and regularity of sessions based on individual needs.
Girraween High School is located at an 18min walk from Pendle Hill railway station, there is also a specialised school bus service that is in operation making it convenient to access. It is in close vicinity to other high-achieving selective schools such as James Ruse Agricultural, Baulkham Hills High, Parammatta High and Prairewood High. Another point of interest is that Giraween High school has an opportunity to engage with other selective schools in the tri-school sporting tournament involving James Ruse Agricultural and Baulkham Hills High – another great opportunity for further socialising with students of high-achieving academic calibre.
Whilst most of the students that gain access into NSW selective schools are naturally gifted, the limited places in these schools means that it is often not enough to rely on talent alone. In order to stay competitive, most students are required to work beyond the school curriculum and this usually means working with tutors after hours. Alchemy tuition provides an affordable service that makes it realistic to go the extra mile without too much financial sacrifice.
